I have covered both Badgeville (see Badgeville Offers Cloud- based Gamification Platform and Expertise) and Jive (see Jive’s Platform Enables Comprehensive Enterprise Integration ). I was pleased to see that Badgeville is now within Jive and recently spoke with Chris Lynch of Badgeville to get an update.

Chris noted that Jive provides a very comprehensive toolset for people to connect and share relevant knowledge across internal and external communities. However, adoption continues to be an issue. Gartner said nearly 72% of people who use these toolsets never actually login to engage with them. Badgeville has now integrated with Jive to increase engagement inside Jive Spaces through gamification.

Badgeville allows companies to reinforce desired user behaviors across their websites, enterprise apps or any digital touchpoint. Through different engagement mechanics, they reward and encourage the appropriate use of tools, including collaboration suites such as Jive. It provides rewards that offer value to users such as recognition for tasks, or achievements tied to expertise. For example, participants can gain rewards for such behaviors as starting a discussion, replying to a discussion, asking a question, answering a question, creating a document, editing a document, and sharing a status update. An achievement page is shown below.

You can also set up a mission. This is a collection of achievements such as those mentioned above. These missions can reinforce a desired set of behaviors and offer additional rewards to participants. A sample mission screen is shown below.

EMC is one firm that has used Badgeville with Jive to increase engagement. EMC set up several missions based on expertise to locate important sources of expertise within the firm. One mission included both internal behaviors and external ones such as registering at the EMC booth at their annual conference. The EMC effort led to a number of documented improvements such as the following:

20% increase in files downloaded

25% Increase in User activity engagement

40% increase in videos watched

In this day of the social enterprise, improved adoption and engagement are critical for success. With gamification, companies have raised user engagement by 21% across the board. Now companies using Jive can easily implement gamification across their platform to improve adoption/engagement, become a more collaborative workforce and build a knowledge store based on user participation.

The integration works like this. Badgeville provides a plug-in to the Jive suite that is specifically designed for Jive. It inserts Badegeville code into key elements of Jive. This allows Jive Pages to connect with Badgeville’ Behavior Engine. Jive administrators use the Behavior Engine to enable companies to setup custom gamification programs to meet their unique objectives. Jive administrators can then build and inject Badgeville rewards within Jive Pages. HTML 5 widgets serve as the main vehicle for this integration. Here is a contextual leader board.

I like this move. Application integration is a core necessity for the connected enterprise to meet its objectives. The Badgeville Jive integration is a nice example of two complimentary applications working to together to meet company goals. In this case, increased adoption and value.

I have covered Moxie Software™, enterprise social software provider, before (see Moxie Provides Free Desktop Sync Capability with Moxie Spaces and Moxie Announces Spaces to Enhance Customer Engagement). They now have announced a partnership with Microsoft Corp. to pursue a joint, go-to-market strategy offering Spaces by Moxie™ within Microsoft Dynamics CRM.

As part of the partnership, Moxie Software™ will provide Microsoft Dynamics CRM with comprehensive, multi-channel and knowledge base solutions for delivering superior customer experiences. Offered on premises or in the cloud, Moxie Software’s Knowledge Spaces™, Email Spaces™, Chat Spaces™, Web Self-Service Spaces™, CoBrowse Spaces™ and Social Media Spaces™ are immediately available to work with Microsoft Dynamics CRM.
Here is a sample screen showing Moxie within Microsoft Dynamics CRM.

The enhanced capability from this paring include:

Single agent desktop that seamlessly works with multi-channel interactions to contact and case records within Microsoft Dynamics CRM.

Automatic search of knowledge base from within the case record for faster resolution.

Ability to publish information from case record into knowledge base.

Proactive customer engagement on the website via rules driven chat and creation of lead/case records within Microsoft Dynamics CRM where appropriate.

Accurate data ensured by allowing agents to update Microsoft Dynamics CRM from within the agent desktop.

This seems a natural partnership. I have written about the need to combine the collaboration capabilities of the new social tools with the enterprise transaction and documentation apps such as CRM (see for example, Integrating the Interactions with the Transactions). The Moxie Microsoft CRM is a perfect example of this. I have seen a few other cases so far and think it will become a trend that others will follow.

Consistent with this trend, Yammer recently announced an integration with Microsoft Dynamics CRM bringing internal collaboration to Dynamics. Moxie’s partnership supports external/customer communications adding channels such as email, chat, co-browse, social media and also a knowledge platform to Microsoft Dynamics CRM.

BroadVision has announced its new Clearvale Social Engagement Analysis Service. This service is designed to help Clearvale enterprise social networking customers better understand and measure how well the level and type of engagement occurring with employees, customers, and partners through the use of social analytics. I spoke with Richard Hughes, Director of Social Strategy at BroadVision to learn more about Clearvale’s social analytics offering. I always enjoy speaking with Richard. Here is one of our last conversations (BroadVision’s Clearvale Offers Integrated Enterprise Social Networking Platform).

Clearvale is an entirely new product built from the ground up with a focus on people. Richard began by going over the five main aspects of the Clearvale social business platform: fully featured enterprise social networking suite, a place for real work, a means to engage the whole organization, coverage for enterprise social ecosystem, and accessibility from any device and any time.

I asked about how application integration is handled, as this is a topic of interest to me. It is also a capability that is essential to meet the middle three objectives above. Richard said that they have built widgets for immediate integration with Salesforce.com, SharePoint, and Outlook. They picked Salesforce because many of their use cases tie into an enterprise CRM system and this is the most prevalent CRM platform. They picked SharePoint because many firms want to keep SharePoint as their enterprise document management system and then have related conversations around these documents in Clearvale. They picked Outlook to allow people to shift conversations away from email and into a much better collaboration tool. These are three wise choices. They also allow for integrations with other apps through their open API so they have covered this requirement quite well.

Before we moved on to our main topic, Richard provided some context. Earlier this year they introduced Clearvale Social Enterprise Transformation (SET) methodology, a 90-day program for assessing readiness, planning, establishing, and refining a social enterprise ecosystem. The SET program is designed to help companies succeed with their social initiatives by combining social best practices, coaching, and a trial of the Clearvale platform.

One of the main benefits of social media is the transparency and subsequent data on employee behavior. However, it is often underutilized. BroadVision found that customers often needed more help in framing questions to take advantage of the analytic capabilities within Clearvale so at the 2012 E2 Innovate Conference in Santa Clara they launched their Clearvale Social Engagement Analysis Service. It is delivered as a stand-alone service or as a component service of the SET program.

This optional consulting service helps customers frame relevant questions and create reports to address the issues they are most concerned with. Here are some of the types of reports available.

Social Reach - the breadth of interaction between members. Business social networks connect people but if members are not interacting with the content, they are not truly being social. Below is a sample social graph. Each person is represented by a dot. The size of the dot represents the level of activity. The lines show the paths of connection. In this case you can see a few central people and many unconnected ones. The data provides a road map for where interventions will be helpful.

Participation Inequality - the extent to which levels of activity differ between different groups of members in the network. A successful business social network should encourage participation from as many people as possible so it’s important to know if a few very active users are compensating for a large number of inactive users.

Inter-department Connectivity - the activity between different departments in the network. Good connectivity inside a team is important, however, high activity levels between other members outside their own department breaks down organizational silos for increased communication and collaboration. A sample screen is shown below

In addition to departments, these reports can be adjusted to show trends by other filters such as geographic locations as shown below.

I really like this capability as the reports go beyond simply counting contributions or comments to showing the relationships between participants within the enterprise. This gives a much clearer picture of the value received and where to focus further adoption efforts. Richard said that although this new service is delivered as a consulting engagement, the main objective to make Clearvale adoptions more successful, not simply to build consulting revenue. This is a good move for any firm offering social business capabilities as social platforms bring into play a new way of doing business. The tools are only the first step. The SET program and this new analytics consulting service will help firms take the remaining steps to succeed.

I have covered harmon.ie before (see New harmon.ie for Office 2013 Simplifies SharePoint Access in the Cloud and Elsewhere and harmon.ie Mobile Brings SharePoint to the iPad). Now harmon.ie® has created a way to bridge the gap between Apple and Microsoft to create a unified social user experience for the enterprise across the iPad, iPhone and desktop with harmon.ie Connect™ for SharePoint. This new capability can unify the collaboration experience, wherever people spend their workday – on email and mobile devices.

Today workers often collaborate with colleagues in the office via email, which they can supplement with SharePoint, IM, unified communications and other social apps. This use of many disconnected apps can make the process difficult and unwieldy. Then, when employees leave the office, the experience can become even more messy and disorganized.

With harmon.ie Connect for SharePoint, document and social information from all sources appear in one window with a consistent user experience, in the office or on the road. For example, users can follow important documents directly from email or their mobile device. Any changes made on one platform immediately become visible on the other.

IDC MarketScape noted in its report, “Worldwide Enterprise Social Software 2012 Vendor Analysis,” that, “The ultimate goal of enterprise social software is to support a business’ ability to surface information in real time and in context in a way that enables a broader business system of relationship. Customers will continue to demand broader and more specific collaboration scenarios that tie together internal and external constituents, deliver sophisticated insight into user behavior on the network, and extend seamlessly across mobile form factors.”

To address this issue harmon.ie Connect for SharePoint has announced that they offer users the following capabilities:

Same Activity Stream across the Desktop and Mobile Devices – Any action performed through one harmon.ie interface is immediately reflected on the other ones, thus providing users with a consistent user experience. For example, simply connect to SharePoint sites or follow documents on the desktop and these become available on SharePoint for iPad. No setup or configuration is needed.

Enterprise-ready iPad – harmon.ie makes the iPad enterprise-ready so users can securely edit and share documents directly from the iPad.

First SharePoint Mobile Enterprise Solution –harmon.ie offers the first full SharePoint solution for mobile and desktop. Users can work in the office and on the road and not miss a beat.

Distribute and Provision Apps – harmon.ie Connect support mobile device management (MDM) for distribution and provisioning of mobile users.

This integration makes a lot of sense to me and is consistent with the trends I am seeing across the social platforms.

With the latest release, IBM Connections continues its movement from providing a suite of applications to becoming a comprehensive social business platform with tighter integration.

I recently spoke with Suzanne Livingston, Senior Product Manager for Connections on the 4.0 release. I have covered Connections a number of times before (see for example, Review of IBM Connections 3.0 and IBM Connections: Analytics + Social). Suzanne and I discussed several enhanced capabilities within Connections 4.0.

First, IBM expanded Activity Streams to include 3rd party applications and “embedded experiences”, a new OpenSocial API to allow for tight integration with other special purpose business applications. This feature allows the user to not only receive updates from a variety of enterprise apps through the Connections Activity Stream, but also it allows them to take action (e.g., approvals, changes) on these updates directly without going to the originating app. The Activity Stream is the event listing (“for example, Bill commented on your request for approval”) and the embedded experience is the mini-view that lets you interact with the app. Both the Activity Stream and the Embedded Apps enable 3rd party integration. Below is a sample Activity Stream screen.

Connections 4.0 aggregates Activity Streams that are customized for your context and you can further enhance this contextualization through following or unfollowing items, groups, people, etc. This filtering allows for more relevant content and reduces the potential for fire hosing the user.

I think this is huge and a potentially transformative step toward better enabling the connected enterprise. Connections can become the hub of this connected enterprise, by not only introducing more social features into enterprise apps, but also by establishing greater integration between the apps, the tasks, and the people within the enterprise. Suzanne said that this is part of IBM’s goal to transform business processes and I certainly agree with this direction.

This embedded experience feature is built on Open Social, a set of standards that IBM and other firms such as Jive, Atlassian, Microsoft, and Google have collaboratively developed or utilized. IBM has turned its contribution into the Open Social Foundation, allowing third-party vendors to make better use of the embedded feature capabilities within Connections for even more robust integrations. SugarCRM, the leading open source CRM, is one example of a firm that has taken this step. Suzanne said that we will continue to see even tighter integrations moving forward.

AppFusions is actively working on such integrations with Immersive for Atlassian, for IBM Connections, integrating the Atlassian Suite to bring business and engineering users together. With a target release at IBM Connect 2013, AppFusions will unveil native integration with Atlassian JIRA, Confluence, Fisheye, Crucible, Stash (Git), and Bamboo.

Suzanne next covered upgrades to email usage within Connections 4.0. Now you can work on your email within Connections, without having to go to the email client. They have this feature for both Domino and Exchange, hitting the vast majority of business email.

Not only can you respond to emails within Connections, but you can also easily share social content. In addition, access to calendaring is provided. This gives you access to the major collaborative capabilities within one environment.

You can have this email access anywhere within Connections and “click to share” updates within your Activity Stream, including adding hashtags and images with these updates. You can then look for trending topics within related hashtags to follow the flow of relevant conversations by those people you are interested in. You can also drill down through filters to see more detail and obtain greater focus. Here is a sample email screen.

Connections 4.0 also provides expanded metrics. There are now tools to make use of available analytic data and create custom reports. For example, you can track adoption across the enterprise and create reports on this activity. There are many use cases for this new capability. You could use Connections to roll out a new HR policy and then track who reads it, who shared it, and what they said about it to get a better picture of how it is being received.

Communities are becoming a major use case for Connections and these analytic capabilities are proving very useful to community managers. They can see the most valued content, the top contributors, and other ways the community is performing. They can make adjustments to the community interface and track responses to these changes.

To further support communities, Connections is making it easier to tie different communities together, even those in separate spaces, or inside and outside the enterprise. This latter feature is important as McKinsey has shown that higher enterprise operating margins correlated with the “a willingness to allow the formation of working teams comprising both in-house employees and individuals outside the organization.”

Now one central community can be used to track what is going on in several related communities, becoming the hub for connected conversations. Activity Streams with embedded experiences can be used to facilitate these cross-community conversations.

Suzanne said they are also facilitating the use of public domain content within the communities. She gave an example of using a blog post, such as this one, to spark a conversation within a community. The community manager can ask for responses to the post or comments on it from the community. The manager can also use the post content to spark conversations about product improvements or enhancements to customer service. The community’s reaction can then go directly back into the blog as a response to the post. They are also allowing for other public domain content from such sources as LinkedIn or Quora, as well as other internal communities, to used by the community.

Connections 4.0 also includes mobile support for iOS, Andriod, and Blackberry. It provides devices specific enhancements such as using the browsing capabilities specific to tablets versus smart phones. In addition, you can add geolocation to your status updates directly from your mobile device and even upload photos for your network or communities to view. Here is sample Connections iPad screen.

Collectively, these enhancements are making Connections into a hub for the connected, social enterprise and should greatly extend its adoption and use.

IBM’s 2012 CEO Survey revealed that 57 percent of CEO’s identified social business as a top priority and more than 73 percent are making significant investments to draw insights into available data. The new capabilities within Connections support both of these findings.

Box provides secure online content management and has been getting a lot of press recently. I covered Box a few years ago (see Box.net Updates Interface and Becomes More Social) but much has happen since then, so it was great to speak with Jeremy Glassenberg, Platform Manager at Box to get an update.

Jeremy’s role involves planning for new developer tools and API methods. He also works on partner integrations and helps to support customers on internal integration projects.

I first asked Jeremy for his perspective on the market excitement that Box has generated. He said that Box offers a good solution to a lot of customers. It makes it easy to move content to the cloud in a secure manner and provides a means for collaboration around this content. Box has developed a good system for customer feedback to continue to update the product.

In addition, their CEO, Aaron Levie, has gained a reputation as a great industry spokesperson who brings a lot of fun to his communication; so his presence has enhanced their press coverage. On Twitter, Aaron describes himself as the Lead Magician (and CEO). A sampling of his tweets confirms the fun factor.

We next dove a bit more into the Box offering.

Box in the Cloud files

Box was started in 2005 as a file storage system but has grown well beyond that initial capability. There is an intuitive interface that allows you to send links to stored content in a secure manner. Box also provides collaboration capabilities around stored content. For example, a team can have their own folder and provide comments on content, assign tasks, and most recently, provide feedback through a new “like” function. Box is also integrated into numerous mobile apps, desktop apps and web services.

I asked Jeremy to expand on their integration strategy.

Box in JIRA – link, preview, edit your Box documents, all from JIRA

AppFusions worked with Box to develop packaged integrations with Atlassian Confluence and JIRA. For the Confluence integration, users can access, preview, embed, edit, upload, and monitor Box activity – all from Confluence (video | listing). The JIRA integration allows for JIRA issues to be linked to Box files directly, as well as previewed, edited, or downloaded, while never leaving JIRA (video | listing).

The integrations are available via Box Apps, and Atlassian Marketplace. AppFusions will also be releasing their Box integrations with Atlassian OnDemand, expected later this calendar year.

Jeremy said he was impressed with both the technical competence and depth of AppFusions’ integrations. He also spoke of the also good attention to the user experience, creating UIs that make sense for the business users.

Box’s success is another validation of the mass migration to the cloud. If you can provide a secure application, business relevant features, and extensive integration capabilities, CIOs and other enterprise leaders will overcome their concerns and make the move to the cloud for its nimble and cost-effective qualities.

I have written about Atlassian on this blog (see for example: Atlassian Makes Significant Moves into the Enterprise Market). In this post, I focus on Atlassian Stash. It provides Git repository management for Enterprise teams behind the firewall.

I spoke with Jens Schumacher, Atlassian’s Group Product Manager for developer tools. These tools include: Bamboo, Crucible, Fisheye, and Stash. Bamboo provides continuous integration and release management. Crucible supports code review and Fisheye allows you to search out source code artifacts of various source code management flavors and browse commits, files, revisions, or related people. It also integrates seamlessly with JIRA.

Enter Stash! Stash incorporates the latest and greatest technologies in DVCS source code management and Git, allowing you to create and manage repositories, set up fine-grained permissions, and collaborate on code in a secure, fast and enterprise-grade manner.

Jens continued, providing me more background on the development of Stash.

Stash is the latest in Atlassian’s developer tools suite and was released in the Spring of 2012. Atlassian’s existing developer tools are already quite popular in development houses, but still the developers wanted more. They wanted to be able to host code in their own repository behind the firewall.

More – engineers are always pushing the envelope: they wanted Git support, a massively popular and growing DVCS approach used in code development and management these days.

To cleanly meet this need in both a tool and extensibility, Atlassian decided to build Stash from scratch including a ground up extensible API approach, rather than on top of their existing tools.

Stash incorporates code review into the development workflow so the new code gets properly reviewed before it is merged with the existing source code.

To facilitate development, Stash allows developers to set up branches, where code changes can be made in isolation and reviewed before being integrated with the mainline. This separation makes development of new features less complex.

You can easily have new code reviewed while incorporating automated testing tools as well. Stash facilitates the merging of reviewed code into the core source code. This concept of a separate workflow for development is popular with open source efforts and Atlassian has now taken a leading industry position with the Stash offering, enabling this capability inside the firewall.

Integration efforts with Stash are already supported in a number of ways.

Per Jens, 80% of the Fortune 500, as well as many many smaller firms, use Atlassian JIRA for issue tracking.Stash is fully integrated with JIRA so you can link code in Stash to a JIRA ticket and track the progress of changes.

Stash also natively integrates with enterprise user directory systems, such as Active Directory or LDAP, to make deployment easier within the enterprise. In addition, again, Stash was built with an extensive REST API to make information within Stash easily integrate-able with other tools.

Jens gave me a simple use case. Their customers often want to migrate content from one repository to another or from the cloud to within the firewall. Stash can automate aspects of this common process to simplify the effort.

In the future, Stash will be enhanced with more branch permission capabilities to better ensure that all code gets reviewed before it is merged into the core source code. They are also working hard on scalability requirements to better serve their many large customers. Currently, Stash supports up to 500 user licenses. Finally, they are working on adding enhanced collaboration capabilities for code review.

Jens noted that Atlassian has a massive ecosystem. This is helpful as there already are a number of add-ons for Stash. For example, there is a badge add-on to acknowledge developers’ efforts and skills. Another is a chart add-on to provide statistics. AppFusions built a Stash commenting add-on for Atlassian’s annual CodeGeist competition. Also, add-ons are available to help with different workflows that organizations have in place.

On top of all that, Atlassian’s very popular SourceTree DVCS client further removes DVCS source code tool complexity, and is used to support and guide the process of adding new workflows with proper controls within branching efforts, among other.

Customer response has been very positive since the release of Stash earlier this year. The timing was right for the release, as developers were ready for it.

Jens’ team is now providing new releases every 7 – 9 weeks, with many of the new capabilities coming from customer input.

New needs are always arising in enterprise software development efforts, and many organizations and third party developers want to tackle these needs. Stash provides enhanced support for these efforts.

You can listen to the podcasts on the CMO 2.0 site and the CIO 2.0 site.

Here are some common themes that seem to emerge when talking to CIO’s and CMO’s:

Companies with strong shared beliefs and values do not have to compensate for local cultures — for them, the work culture trumps the local culture.

- All CMO’s and CIO’s who I have recently interviewed think that understanding employee culture is an important aspect of their success. Many CMO’s are also starting to pay more attention to consumer cultures.
- Most CMO’s who I recently interviewed are trying to humanize their brands by having people whose job is not marketing or sales to engage with their customers.
- Most CMO’s who I recently interviewed are trying to promote global brands while staying locally relevant.
- Every single CMO and CIO who I interviewed is metrics-driven.

If you have suggestions for other CMO’s or CIO’s to interview, please let me know.

Casey started off by describing the role of the GSA, which is to provide common business services and shared services to the rest of the Federal Government. You can think of the GSA as the business management arm of the Federal Government. Casey described to me her career journey that led to becoming the CIO at the GSA. She started her career as a systems engineer at Lockheed Martin and got her first taste of government work when she became a legislative fellow on Capitol Hill for a year. She continued working in industry at the intersections of business and technology until 9/11, when she really wanted to return to Washington and work in public service. That is how ten years ago she found her way to GSA.

Next we talked about the changing workforce – a topic near and dear to Casey, and one that she writes about on her blog. With 4 generations at work, and with the old management structures and practices that were not really designed for knowledge workers still in place, it is a real challenge to design a workplace environment in which people can have an impact and the opportunity to be autonomous in creating a knowledge product of their own. You want to create an environment that allows a professional workforce to do their best work in a way that is not overly constricted by unnecessary management structures. While it is harder to implement changes fast when you are dealing with taxpayer dollars and public trust, Casey sees lot of energy to change, to embrace new technology, to be innovative, and to be thought leaders in government. She dispells the perception that a government workforce is being less open to change.

Casey’s mantra is that work is what you do, and not where you go in the morning. That is why she led the effort to enable every GSA employee to have access to their critical documents and messages from anywhere, any time, and with any device. You no longer have to be in one of the government buildings, using a government laptop, connected to the government network to get your work done.

Another big mantra of Casey’s is that she wants to empower people to work smarter — meaning having the ability to work as part of a team when not all team members are in one location. They did that partly by rolling out SalesForce’s Chatter social collaboration product, as part of her collective intelligence initiative. They also set up a lightweight workflow development tool — Force.com — that is used consistently throughout the agency and that allows them to roll up the work into a common framework and to understand things like cycle times, and where investments are being spent on a national and on an agency-wide level.

Next we spoke about the importance of culture in organizations. The GSA is fortunate to have a historic culture of innovation — dating back to the mid 90′s when they were the first agency to give everyone access to the Internet. By tapping into that culture of innovation and the history of taking pride in being thought leaders they have now been able to develop a culture of acceptance — one in which there is a willingness to try and adopt new things.

Casey is also convinced that technology can shape culture by being able to break down barriers and boundaries. Communications and decision-making is no longer top down, and by using social media technologies one can now rapidly find those individuals within the organization that are most open and enthusiastic about strategic changes. They can become thought leaders and partner with the leaders of the organization to shape the culture in a new way. Casey used the example of the Great Ideas Hunt, which was launched by the head of agency in an effort to find great ideas from employees on how to save money and be more effective. Not only did it lead to great ideas, many of which will be implemented, it was also an effective way for the head of the agency to communicate his priorities, and enlist the help of others to make it happen.

Lastly we discussed the opportunities of big data in organizations. The federal government has of course a lot of data that is useful for other organizations. That is why the Obama administration launched an initiative around big government data, called Data.gov. That is a site where government agencies and state and local governments publish their data. The format of the data is rather raw, but the expectation is that others would develop all kind of cool end-user apps using the government data — for example, combining positioning data with bus and train scheduled, so that from your smartphone you can pull up an app that shows you where you are, where the nearest train stations are and when the next train will arrive.

Other things we talked about include:

How to use social collaboration to connect the different generations at work

How to quickly locate the right expertise across the entire agency

Lessons learned from running ideation campaigns

The use of social media and social media policies

The effects of compliance issues on social media use

Gamification of business and the impact of millennials on usage

The future of education and the need for continued employee education

Consumerization of IT
